Photorefractive Keratectomy
PRK, or Photorefractive Keratectomy, is another form of laser vision correction offered by Donelson Eye Associates. PRK is very similar to LASIK as both procedures use an excimer laser to reshape the cornea.
Dr. Donelson will recommend PRK to patients that may not be perfect candidates for LASIK. With PRK, Dr. Donelson does not create an outer corneal flap as he would for LASIK patients. Instead, the corneal epithelium, or outer layer of the cornea, is removed. The laser is then applied to reshape the cornea and correct the existing refractive error.
With PRK, the healing times are longer than traditional LASIK because the cells of the corneal epithelium need to grow back.
The decision to have PRK or LASIK can only be determined through a comprehensive evaluation. To schedule a Free Consultation to determine candidacy for LASIK or PRK, call Donelson Eye Associates today!
